Q： Hello Zhang Fei, as a designer who has won the IF Design Award, you have created many wonderful items for everyone's lives. 

So, what is your unique understanding of design?

A: I am a designer. I studied industrial design in college, and I am also a teacher at the School of Science and Technology of Zhejiang University of Technology. 

When communicating with students, I often share my insights over the years, which is that the relationship between design, production, and experience is very close. 

If you rely solely on inspiration to create bubbles of design inspiration, it is useless. Before designing, 

you need to understand the production process more, otherwise the design will be suspended.

Q: You have so many design works, all characterized by returning to the essence of life. Which works are your favorite?

A: When I am doing original design now, I feel that many things in life are unreasonable and even unnecessary.

If I were to say my preferences, they would be raw materials like wood and magnets. I also really like the expression of magic. 

There are many design elements behind it, so sometimes I apply the inspiration of magic to my design works. My design works were created at different times,

 representing my understanding of life in each period. My designs sometimes take three days to come out, but one design work took three years. 

Speaking of this sweet trouble, it's the fish shaped pen with six magnets inside. Close the pen cover. In this way, the pen core can be easily opened and replaced. 

When I first designed it, I made 100, but less than 10 were truly successful. The Germans asked me to do a lot of work, but I couldn't do it. 

I was very distressed. Then I learned the process from the master repeatedly, and then I became more perfect. 

Until the end of 2015, I can proudly say that I made 100 units of this product, and 99 of them were satisfactory.

Q: What new works did 2017 bring us?

A: One set of Chinese chess, two sets of chess pieces, the light one is made of maple wood, and the dark one is made of black walnut. 

Chess pieces can be stored like tangram. When the chassis flips over, it's a chessboard. Usually, chess pieces have only one shape, while this chess piece has seven shapes. 

In order to ensure that each chess piece can be fully pieced together into a flat surface, the shape of each chess piece must be precisely measured and CNC manufactured. 

When making this chess set, polishing is one of the production difficulties. It is not only necessary to ensure the smooth touch brought by polishing, 

but also to ensure that there is no error in the shape of the chess pieces. The chessboard also has high requirements for wood,

and the width of the selected wood must conform to the size of the chessboard. After cutting and laser engraving, the Chu River and Han boundary are carved.

If you have watched the video, you will feel that it can be pieced together and organized like a tangram, and even as fun as a Tetris game. 

In fact, some children who have not been exposed to chess can also use it as a toy to play. Chinese culture is vast and profound. 

Even in today's era of electronic products, we still hope that children can experience the unique charm of traditional games.

Q: When the factory workers first arrived, they didn't understand and often asked you, 'We don't make airplanes, do we have to be so exquisite?

' Your demanding attention to product details stems from 'craftsmanship', right?

A: The egg "EGG" won the German IF Product Design Award in 2014 and is our star product. It is actually a magnet. When it holds onto a paper clip, 

it holds an egg like a haystack. It's interesting that even at the "2017 Design Tianjin · Original Life Show" flagship store of "BEGROW Life Master" at Xiyuehui, 

you can't even notice how the magnet is inserted. We actually have a way to achieve the so-called 'seamless', seamless,

for me it is a detail in the product and also a knot in my heart. When making that Music Box, it was the same, its wood grain was continuous, 

it was a complete piece of wood. This music box won the IF Award again in 2015. I have always believed that details can move people, even moving them.
